Awakening the Indonesian Youth

It has been proven that a cornerstone waking up national resurgence was built by the youth of Indonesian. While the struggle of the older generation in the Dutch-colonialization era tend to be confined in local mindset, the youth came up with the idea that such method never achieve a goal to deprive the Dutch from the land of Indonesia. Of course in that time their idea was deemed too extreme since no one before ever came out with such idea, but, in that time the elder’s cynicism could also be understood, their hypothesis was logical, if we had not ever succedded of outpowering the Dutch in each of our every local area, how could we gain win over them in the entire archiplelago of Indonesia? Hero

Today was a special day for us. Every 10 November all of Indonesian should take a tranquil moment, give a honor for our heroes, they who sacrificed everything for this beloved country. When I was in grade school, my teacher said that a hero is someone that his or her work beneficial for the others or society. That was an interesting statement: “a work that beneficial to other”. The Dutch Government has awarded a honor for Herman William Daendels for his gallantry, because he is a “hero” that defending Holland East Indies (Indonesia) from British invading. But, for Indonesian Daendels known as the cruel general responsible for Indonesian misery during The Anyer-Panarukan Project. I think it is strange and astonishing because a bias came in evaluating someone’s heroism. So, if someone adores Mr. A as a hero, then the other one does not, what is the real meaning of a hero? Was Christopher Columbus a hero because he opened way to America for Europe, but made the Indian lived moribund in their motherland? Was Albert Einstein a hero because he brilliantly invented the relativity theory, but it also lead way for atom bomb developing? Were warriors and soldiers battled in war hero because they give their country glory but also give misery for their lost enemy?

Resensi Buku: Panggil Aku Kartini Saja (Pramoedya Ananta Toer )

Continue reading
